‘Makes total sense’: Swifties elated as Ancestry reveals Taylor Swift and Emily Dickinson are related
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Genealogy company Ancestry has found that Taylor Swift, who recently announced a part of her upcoming album 'The Tortured Poets Department,' is related to legendary American poet Emily Dickinson, as exclusively revealed by TODAY on Monday, March 4.
The site divulged that Swift and Dickinson, "are sixth cousins, three times removed."
Emily Dickinson and Taylor Swift are related to each other
Ancestry shared with the media outlet, “Swift and Dickinson both descend from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut)."
It added, “Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line.”
Interestingly, Swift herself has earlier referenced the 19th century poet while talking about the different types of lyrics she writes for her songs.
In 2022, while receiving the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International, she said, “If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre.”
While Swift is currently on the Asia leg of her Eras tour, she divulged during a February performance in Australia that writing her new album over the last two years reminded her “why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life”.
According to Billboard, she said, “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets."
